The Mavericks Internship Experience aims to equip mid-career individuals with relevant skills and to be industry ready!
Learn more about Xing Ern’s experience, who transitioned from HR to a Junior Consultant!
What was your previous career and what is your current role?
I previously worked in HR in a government statutory board, specialising in learning & development. Currently, I'm a Junior Consultant with Mavericks where I collaborate with clients to develop applications that meet their business needs.
What inspired you to change careers?
I realised that the work I was doing in my previous career wasn't something I wanted to do for the long-term. I decided to try to learn programming on the side and found that I enjoyed it and could see myself doing it as a career.
How did you acquire the necessary skills for your new industry?
I attended a full-time bootcamp for 2 months where I picked up the basics of web development. I also did a lot of self-studying with online courses and books.
What advice would you give to aspiring Career Changers?
It is a tough transition, but if you truly believe that this is the career for you, go for it and trust the process. Beyond just learning how to use a particular framework or library, try to really understand how it works and the underlying technology - it will make you a better developer.
How has your experience been so far?
It's been challenging but great. I really enjoy solving technical problems, which is something I didn't have much of in my previous career. The hours fly by when I'm absorbed in a programming task. I've also been pushed out of my comfort zone in liaising with and making presentations to clients. I've definitely seen growth in my soft skills, which are important in any career and industry.
How did Mavericks help you with your career transition?
I was able to start working on actual features soon after joining Mavericks - that hands-on experience was invaluable. In addition, during my brief time with the company so far, I've dabbled in setting up CI/CD pipelines, provisioning resources on the cloud and even UI/UX design. I'm grateful for the opportunities to try new things (and make mistakes!) in a safe environment.
